Ingredients in Slow Cooker Chicken and Gravy
SLOW COOKER CHICKEN AND GRAVY RECIPE TIPS
- Chicken – The recipe uses boneless, skinless chicken breasts so they shred easily to mix with the gravy. You could substitute this with boneless, skinless chicken thighs if you prefer dark meat.
- Chicken soup – We use a shortcut of canned soup to add more flavor and to thicken the gravy. You can substitute canned soup by adding a little milk towards the end of cooking, thickening the sauce with a cornstarch slurry and adding a dash of celery seed.
- Water – This recipe uses water instead of chicken broth because there’s enough sodium from the flavor packets.
- Chicken gravy mix – This is the dry stuff in the packets. The brand I used was McCormick.
- Onion gravy mix – I used McCormick onion gravy mix for this recipe. If you don’t like the taste of onions, try using two chicken gravy mix packets instead.
- Garlic powder – You can substitute this with freshly minced garlic.
- Cooking time – Boneless, skinless chicken breasts don’t take much time to cook so you’ll only need to slow cook them for 4 hours. If you cook any longer than that, you may risk overcooking them and end up with dry and tough chicken.
- Salt – There’s no need to add more salt to this recipe because there’s enough flavor and sodium from the gravy packets.
- Gravy thickness – If your gravy is too thick, add a splash of low-sodium chicken broth to thin it out a little. If your gravy is too thin, add a cornstarch slurry, bring to a boil and simmer until thickened.
- Leftovers – Store this in the fridge for 3-4 days.
- Freeze – Freeze for up to 2-3 months.
- Reheating – Reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop. Add a splash of water or low-sodium chicken broth to loosen up the sauce when reheating if needed.
Customize It!
- Add some onions – Slice up 1/2 a yellow onion for more flavor.
- Add some herbs – Herb it up with some rosemary, sage, oregano, or thyme.
- Add some veggies – Cook it with some sliced white or baby bella mushrooms or add in some green peas towards the end of cooking time.
What to Serve with Chicken and Gravy
Crock pot chicken and gravy pairs wonderfully with some mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice. Balance it out with some veggies on the side like peas, green beans, asparagus, garlic Parmesan roasted broccoli, creamed corn, or garlic butter mushrooms. You could also stuff them in a warmed crusty hoagie and make a hot chicken sandwich.
And that’s about it. Enjoy this simple but comforting meal and let me know how you liked it, what substitutions you made or what you paired it with in the comments below!

This will serve 4 so you can make it and have leftovers for the two of you the next day. That’s what we did!

I made this for dinner tonight along with homemade mashed potatoes and a pan of dressing. It was delicious!!! The only thing different I did was boiled 2 eggs and added that to the chicken and gravy before I served it. I like eggs in my light gravies
The Cooking Jar says
Thanks for sharing your additions, Angela. I’ve never had boiled eggs in gravy before but I’m betting it was delicious!

My guests loved this! It was soooo delicious. I served over basmati rice with fresh broccoli on side!

Glad to hear it! Basmati rice is the best rice if you ask me, it’s so fragrant.

I hope you do! It’s a personal favorite of mine when I want comfort food but want to also be a bit lazy. I pair mine with peas and rice 🙂

Can you bake this in the oven instead?
The Cooking Jar says
I haven’t tested it in the oven but you absolutely can. I would put it in a casserole dish, cover, and try baking at 400°F for 25-30 minutes or until the chicken is fork-tender.

Thanks!

Did you mean onion SOUP mix instead of onion gravy mix? I do not see any kind of onion gravy mix, even when I Google it.
The Cooking Jar says
McCormick has an onion gravy mix that looks like this: https://www.mccormick.com/spices-and-flavors/recipe-mixes/gravies-and-sauces/onion-gravy-mix
If you have trouble finding it though, you can always use two packets of the chicken gravy mix instead. If you want the taste of onions, add some fresh onions as well.

Are you kidding? This was super great just following the directions and used egg noodles! I need to start using the slow cooker more often. I will be making this again!

Love it! So happy you enjoyed it 🙂 That’s two votes for serving it over egg noodles now.

This recipe was spectacular!!! Of course I added my own seasonings to kick it up a notch. I also added fresh thick sliced white mushrooms and a half bag of fresh spinach with a half of chopped plum tomato…just enough to create a concasse. I also used 2 packets of just chicken gravy and a can of cream of mushroom soup which was all I had on hand. Cooked on low a total of 6 hours (big chicken pieces) and threw it all over buttered noodles with finely chopped fresh garlic and chives. Delicious!!!! Easy!!!! Right up my alley.
